Profile: John Green
Meet happy nerd-author, John Green.
because nerds like us are allowed to be unironically enthusiastic about stuff… Nerds are allowed to love stuff, like jump-up-and-down-in-the-chair-can’t-control-yourself love it. Hank, when people call people nerds, mostly what they’re saying is ‘you like stuff.’ Which is just not a good insult at all. Like, ‘you are too enthusiastic about the miracle of human consciousness’.”
- John Green
This is the moment I knew John Green was my spirit animal. I mean, read that quote: who else can surmise exactly what it’s like to be a happy nerd? He really puts into perspective what it means when someone insults you by calling you a “nerd”, and helps those who are possibly on the receiving end of some nasty bullying by pointing out that you probably enjoy life a bit more.
John Green is one half of the Vlogbrothers, who have been blogging on youtube since 2007. He’s a fast talking, often-question answering, coins phrases and crazy combinations of words, likes peanut butter face (honestly, don’t ask) and adores Honey Badger.
In another terrific video, John Green has declares his absolute love for other things.
John Green might be a little on the crazy side—he signed over 150, 000 first print copies of his latest novel The Fault in Our Stars—but it’s a good crazy side. He’s the kind of guy who can make you feel at home in your crazy—in your obsessions and observations of life. He’s not someone who shies away from talking about real stuff: the economy, your love life (or lack of it), conjoined twins, international crises, and so on. Even if you’re not an expert with a capital E on subjects, John Green posits his discussions in an inclusive way. It’s stylish and skilful. I often wonder how he does it—it might help me the next time Ruby asks for my help with tech.
John is also an award winning author, teaches World History on the youtube channel, Crash Course, and can be found tweeting at @realjohngreen or @sportswithjohn (profanity warning, you young’uns!), and tumbles at fishingboatproceeds.tumblr.com/.
