Susin Nielsen Answers

We asked Susin Nielsen, author of Word Nerd, Dear George Clooney Will You Please Marry My Mother and The Reluctant Journal of Henry K. Larsen,  a very simple question… which she didn’t answer.  But she told us something else pretty interesting instead.

Susin, what book would you give to your 14 year old self?

Oh, geez. That’s a hard one. I can’t think of a book that I WISH had been around when I was 14, but I can tell you about a book I read when I was probably a year younger than that, 13 – that had a profound impact on me – was Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret,” by Judy Blume. That, and Deenie (also Judy Blume).

It was the first time I’d read books that seemed to deal with girls who were in many ways just like me (okay, I didn’t need a back brace like Deenie, but you know what I mean). Blume talked about sexuality and body changes in an open and honest way.

She influences my writing to this day.

Ask an Author is a semi-regular feature on O’Deary Library.  If you have a question for an author, leave it in the comments below.  We’ll try to reach the author and get an answer for you.  Maybe he or she won’t duck the question like Susin Nielsen did this one.
