Susin Nielsen Wins Governor General Award For New Book
Big news for Susin Nielsen fans: the Canadian writer has been awarded the Governor General Award for Children’s Literature!
Author of such books as Word Nerd and Dear George Clooney, Please Marry My Mom, Vancouver author Susin Nielsen has just received the Governor General Award for her latest book, The Reluctant Journals of Henry K. Larsen! The book deals with the subject matter of bullying and the loss of a sibling, and is aimed at children aged 11 to 15. This is only her third young adult novel.
“Thoughtprovoking and relevant, it addresses the effects of bullying in a realistic, compelling and compassionate way,” said the Governor General’s Award citation of the story. “Henry’s journey is moving and weirdly, wildly funny.”
“The story is about the ripple effects of an event like that and how it deeply affects a family, and particularly the surviving sibling,” Nielsen told The Vancouver Sun, following her win. “All of that said, believe it or not, there is actually a fair amount of humour in the book.”
You can read more about the book here, and check out a bunch of question-and-answers with the author for the O’Deary Library and Ruby Skye, P.I. below. Congratulations on your win, Susin!
