O’Deary Library in the Classroom

O’Deary Library is the fictional library referred to in the title of the classroom-friendly web series Ruby Skye P.I.: The Haunted Library.  The content is appropriate for a wide range of students, particularly those in fourth to ninth grade.  We hope you’ll use the site in your classroom and encourage your students to enjoy the site and contribute content to it.

This site, like the other content in the Ruby Skye P.I. story world, is intended to encourage students to think to think critically, develop media literacy skills and express their love for books and story.

Media Literacy Classroom Activities

In books, TV and film, the story is confined to medium it is presented on.  Ruby Skye P.I. is an example of transmedia — or cross-platform storytelling.  The story and its world spills beyond the limits of the web series itself, into websites, blogs and extra features video.  O’ is an example of world building — it lends the story credibility by making it seem as though the world is real.  Use these activities and discussion topics to explore the use of transmedia and O’ in the Ruby Skye P.I. story world.

Discussion topic: How does help to tell the story of O’Deary Library is the fictional library referred to in the title of the  web series Ruby Skye P.I.: The Haunted Library.  What themes found in the web series are expressed by the library website?  What opportunities are there for people to participate in the Ruby Skye P.I. story world through  How does the site add to the story world?  Does it add to your pleasure from the story?

Activity: What characters from The Haunted Library can you find on the site? Did you learn anything new about them?

Activity: What books mentioned in The Haunted Library can you find on the site? What types of additional information can you find about them? Contribute some new information about one of those books to the site about those books?

Book and Reading Related Activities includes lots of book reviews, information about authors, book-related videos and other news to interest readers from fifth to tenth grade.  The site offers students the opportunity to delve more deeply into books they love, interact with other readers and express their own thoughts about the books they are reading.  We’ve also included a number of student-made, book-focused videos on the site to illustrate some new and cool ways of completing literature-related school projects.

About Ruby Skye P.I.: The Haunted Library

Ruby Skye P.I. is an award-winning web show for kids that is completely free to watch from any internet connection.  The story follows teen detective, Ruby Skye, a resourceful and determined teen whose curiousity leads her into mysterious, funny and exciting situations.

The series uses a blend of comedy, action, mystery and cliff hangers to engage students in fourth to eighth grade and to keep them thinking.  Entirely violence free, the series can be used in the classroom in a variety of ways.
